Google AdSense™ is a new contextual ad program offered by Google which allows advertisers to have their ads appear on a syndicate network of sites served by Google. Google AdWords™ text ads are served to these web sites. The program was met with skepticism at first and click through rates in the beginning were poor. Few thought that the AdSense advertising program would be preferred by affiliate program users, yet it appears affiliate programs are feeling the pinch.

With Google AdSense™, participating web site publishers can gain not only a certain rate of revenue per click when their visitors click on one of the ads, they're also receiving free relevant content. The ads come on two formats, one, a horizontal banner where two ads are usually displayed. This format is fairly unobtrusive yet has enough presence to gain attention. The other larger format is a skyscraper type banner (vertical) that contains perhaps 4 to 6 ads.

Text banner ads also have a usability and speed advantage that is attractive to affiliate banner publishers. They are constantly pressured by high bandwidth demands together with low click thru rates on graphic banners in general. That opens the doors for fast, contextual ad programs like AdSense to move in.

How Google AdSense Works

Google determines which ads to serve to a particular content site by analyzing the material in the pages where the ads are served. It uses an algorithm to weight various features such as font size, title tags, body copy, keyword frequency, etc. The content of the page determines which ads will be served.

Another good feature for content publishers is the ability to filter out competitor's ads.

Some content publishers are reporting good returns (40-60% commissions) while others are wondering why they aren't getting the types of payments they imagined receiving. There are phrases in the AdWords program that bid up to $30.00 USD per click. If your site has sizable traffic, they offer extra incentives that could certainly translate to a very large revenue stream.

Web site advertising revenue potential, low maintenance and relevant ad content means the Google AdSense™ program is worth a try.
