About Craig McLaughlan

Born and raised in Melbourne Australia, I moved to Barcelona, Spain in 1991, in time to catch the Olympic Games in '92. Since leaving university, I have started, grown, and sold several businesses. This gives me first hand knowledge of the issues that small and medium sized business owners face.

Training and/or Education

I left university where I was studying Architecture to start my own business, and went on to buy out our largest competitor and merge the two companies. Eleven years later I sold my share in the business to a partner.

I started my first website in 1999. When the web design company I'd contracted couldn't keep up with the demand of the dotcom boom, it was either wait, or complete the job myself. I jumped in and taught myself about building websites but once launched, it was a shock to find out that clients weren't beating a path to my door, so I set about learning everything I could about SEO.

I am an editor at ODP (dmoz.org) the largest human built directory in the world. This gives me a better insight into how directories work, as well as the opportunity to return something to the sector.

Website and/or Graphic Design Experience

I've been able to create tens and tens of professional looking websites using the colours, fonts, and feeling from existing corporate logos. These days I don't do much hands-on design, but I can recommend a reliable designer and can consult with him/her on new projects.

Technical Experience

I have ample experience working in HTML and PHP, and a dislike of commercial websites made entirely in Flash (which are nearly impossible to optimise).

Many of my permanent clients have websites that I created from scratch, and once launched, have retained me to further develop/optimise their sites.
