Yahoo! Site Solution for Small Business Promotions

2009-02-09 - There is a current topic at WebmasterWorld titled: SEO: The Current Myths of Search Engine Optimization (Subscription Required) that discusses some of the various myths that continue to perpetuate within the Internet marketing communities.

During my participation in that topic, I performed and submitted my research to counter the many claimed myths about the META Description Tag and META Keywords Tags. Part of that supporting documentation comes from the Yahoo! Site Solution Services, General Search Help, and the SubmitNet Services.

SubmitNet

While perusing the various information available within the Yahoo! Site Solution documentation, you'll find references to a Yahoo! and SubmitNet services affiliation. Based on the information I've read, SubmitNet is the provider for Yahoo!'s Site Solution services. I've confirmed that by matching up the data that is available in the Yahoo! Site Solution documents and that on the SubmitNet.net website.

SubmitNetOnce you leave the Yahoo! Site Solution section, which places a heavy emphasis on developing your META Description Tag and META Keywords Tag, and venture into the SubmitNet.net domain, you'll have crossed into a parallel time, I'm guessing somewhere around the year 1999. Just wait until you read some of this stuff being promoted to Yahoo! Site Solution small business customers.

Which search engines do you submit to?

Submitnet currently submits to the web's top search engines and directories. Please take a moment to review our search engines and directories listed below. All Submitnet SEO programs have automated submission to each of the engines and directories listed here, each month, for the entire length of your program. Should I submit multiple pages from the same site?

In order to achieve the best exposure on search engines, it is recommended that you submit multiple pages from your site. The main home page along with lower sub pages should be submitted in order to obtain a broader and more targeted overall reach. You can add pages to be submitted via your Submitnet program by clicking on the ADD URL button in your site management area.

How do I know if I've been submitted?

Submitnet sends an email to you each time your URL is submitted confirming the submission. Within the email, there will be the list of search engines and directories that your URL was submitted to and if the submission was successful or not. One way to view your link within the top search engines and directories is to utilize the Position Check tool that Submitnet offers.

How long does it take for my site to be listed by a search engine?

Many of the search engines can take up to 8 to 12 weeks to list a site. Search engines, on average, receive thousands of submissions every day so this can be a lengthy process. The approximate time for some of the more popular search engines to list sites are:

8-10 weeks: Altavista, Excite, HotBot, Lycos, Webcrawler
8-12 weeks: Yahoo!

Do I need to keep re-submitting my site?

The important thing to remember when it comes to search engine re-submission is not to over do it. This can be construed as spam. It is highly recommended you resubmit pages of your site once per month so your URL(s) will not be dropped from the search engines index. This service is included automatically with your Submitnet membership.

How do I add META tags to my site using Microsoft FrontPage?

By using Submitnet's online tools in conjunction with Microsoft FrontPage you can optimize your site for search engines.

  1. Open Your page in FrontPage
  2. Click HTML view (HTML tab at bottom left hand corner of document)
  3. Copy the SubmitNet custom meta tags from Meta Tag Generator
  4. Note: Only copy the information between the head tags. Example (only copy and paste this part):
    <Title>your title</Title>
    <META Name="revisit-after" Content="30 Days">
    <META Name="Description" Content="your description">
    <META Name="Keywords" Content="keyword, keyword, keyword">
    <META Name="Author" Content="your name">

Admin Note: See that revisit-after META Tag up there? Now we know where, and why, the myth continues. Bad Webmaster, Bad!

A similar service from SubmitNet has just rolled out across IPOWER, FatCow, PowWeb and BizLand as of 2009-01-15. How many more websites are going to be using the SubmitNet tools to generate that revisit-after META Tag?

SubmitNet, Inc., a recognized leader of customized search engine optimization (SEO) and search engine marketing (SEM) platforms, announced the integration of its online marketing tools - including a free starter option - into the packages offered by several leading Web hosting companies.

I won't extract any more of the historical writings from the SubmitNet website. I think you can get a clear picture of what is being sold and promoted heavily to Yahoo! Site Solution small business customers through this SubmitNet business affiliation.
