2009-05-02 - What is a PermaTweet? Is it like a PermaLink? Where can I find the PermaTweet? How do I use the PermaTweet link for Retweeting (RT @)? Why should I even use a PermaTweet?
ALL of your Tweets (Updates) are stored/archived at http://twitter.com/username/status/********** (except for those you delete). These are what I refer to as PermaTweets.
For example, I have a BENandHANK library of PermaTweets that I developed while tracking the progress of that client campaign on Twitter. BENandHANK.com Press Coverage

At the bottom left of every Tweet is a date and time stamp which is linked to the http://twitter.com/username/status/********** area, these are your archived Twitter Updates. This is Evergreen Tweet Territory and should be treated as so. These are your PermaTweets.

Take the http://twitter.com/username/status/********** link and use that in a RT (Retweet) and/or RE (Reference) and/or SRC (Source). Using the above example, I'd format the following Tweet for the Twitter Search Optimization PermaTweet...
Twitter Search Optimization http://Twitter.com/pageoneresults/status/1433577650
The above Tweet is 79 characters and leaves 61 characters for RT and comments. I might format my RT of a PermaTweet like this...
Twitter Search Optimization http://Twitter.com/pageoneresults/status/1433577650 RT @pageoneresults / Great tips!
The above Retweet is 112 characters. Note how I've kept the RT Front Loaded! I want the nature of the Tweet to always remain the core focus, not the RT @ labels. I've placed the RT homage at the end of the Tweet instead of the beginning. You'll want to pay close attention here as the Front Loaded portion of the Tweet is where the power of optimization comes in. Think about Micro-IPW.
After the original Tweet content and RT @Username and/or SRC @Username references, I'll use a forward slash (/) as a separator and make a comment. Anyone else Retweeting after the initial Tweet could take everything after the forward slash (/) and replace/append with their own comments. They might even consider using related phrases in their comments to solidify the meaning of the original Tweet.
Twitter Search Optimization http://Twitter.com/pageoneresults/status/1433577650 RT @pageoneresults / Titles, Retweets, Search and more!
The above Retweet is 135 characters. Follow me on this one. If you make the above a regular practice, you keep the RT's Front Loaded and each person thereafter (Subsequent Retweeters) can use the / backend of the Tweet for related comments. When you look at search metrics using the above RT methods, you will clearly see what I'm referring to. I don't want to explain that in great detail here.

When Retweeting and/or Recycling Retweets you may want to consider the following...
Note: Twitter PermaTweet links DO NOT convert (TinyURL). Due to their construct of http://twitter.com/username/status/********** You'll notice there are no hyphens or underscores in the PermaTweet link. This type of URI construct bypasses the TinyURL bit.ly conversion process. Except those who have underscores in their Username.

For reference. For longevity. Forever.
PermaTweets would be those Tweets that are worthy of longevity which covers a good portion of the RT activity I see in my Twitter Timelines. Instead of fragmenting the meaning of the original Tweet by pushing its content forward with RT @ references, use the PermaTweet link and RT Front Loading. You always want to reference that original PermaTweet link. Believe me, I've been testing this for almost a year now.
Now that Twitter have implemented META Descriptions, it is important that you pay close attention to your Tweet and Retweet methodology.
Whatever methods you devise to start tagging your PermaTweets and then categorizing them would be of great benefit for all involved. Collections of PermaTweets grouped together through various Tweets and Retweets is a powerful force on the Twitter platform. Use that to your advantage. Construct your Tweets and Retweets carefully. Promote your PermaTweets today!
