Twitter Search Secrets Revealed

I'm not going to share any secrets here about Twitter Search. There are some things that you don't write about and that would be one of them. If you've been watching that Twitter Search timeline and are performing any sort of research that may require comparing with other SE searches, you'll have noticed that Google have been returning Twitter Statuses in its own SERPs since 2009 February. You may have also seen Tweets appearing in Google Alerts.

As of this date and time (2009-03-27T10:30:00-0700), Google show 53,800,000 results from the Twitter.com domain, Yahoo! 12,789,000, Live 2,100,000 and Ask around 4,800,000. That's 73,489,000+ Twitter results being algorithmized this very second!

Yes, Search.Twitter.com is Disallowed via robots.txt. That means that anything under the search hostname (aka sub-domain) will not show in normal SERPs. But, if you do specific advanced queries, you can clearly see that Google will crawl anything Disallowed via robots.txt and display a URI only listing, this has been their default behavior for years. If there are links to Disallowed content, it is fair game for crawling (and potentially indexing) by all.

Under certain circumstances, these URI listings may be in top positions for specific search queries. Example; search Google for TweepMe. Look at the first result (as of 2009-03-28T10:30:00-0700). It's a Twitter Search query that got indexed because it was linked to. So be very careful in how you interpret the robots.txt file. It doesn't stop content from being crawled and/or indexed and showing up in the SERPs.

External links to robots.txt Disallowed files will cause challenges if your intent was to keep things out of the search indices. The robots.txt file is a roadmap to all the content you don't want indexed. I've heard of individuals that make it part of their negative SEO campaigns to surf Disallowed robots.txt files and link to them just because they can.

2009-03-30 Update: Twitter have changed how the Replies function works. You will now see your @username instead of the word Replies and they are now referred to as Mentions. You can now see ALL Mentions of your @username via the previous Replies section. This negates the need for some to search for @username via Twitter Search.

When you click that @username tab, you'll see a list of all tweets referencing your account with the @username convention anywhere in the tweet, instead of only at the beginning which is how it used to work.

Sheep Spying Real Time Search Results via the Web

Perform a query, leave that browser tab open and watch real time results. The tab will light up with the number of new results as they appear in the Twitter Search Timeline. I'm talking seconds when we're not distracted with the Twitter Whale Watching Tours.

Subscribe to Search Query RSS Feeds

Perform a query, subscribe to that feed. Organize in your Feed Reader. Remember, you may have some Followers who do not Follow you but are subscribed to your Twitter Feed. Be careful in your interpretations of Twits not Following. Just because they don't Follow you, doesn't mean they are not subscribed to your Twitter RSS Feed. Covert Following on Twitter

Monitor Twitter for ALL Things of Interest

Use Google Alerts and TweetBeep.com Twitter Alerts. I utilize email alerts for backup purposes and to verify that I didn't miss something of importance with the queries that I'm monitoring via other channels.
